Lord Janner’s voting record since granting power of attorney

Full list of 203 times when Labour peer voted in House of Lords despite ‘dementia’

By Alex Varley-Winter | 12 May 2015

Labour peer Lord Janner voted 203 times in the House of Lords since giving power of attorney to two of his children over his health.

Exaro publishes the full list votes in which Janner took part in the House of Lords since the former Labour MP signed the lasting power of attorney in April 2009.

Janner’s voting record shows that he was a busy member of the House of Lords until November 2013, the month before police raided his home as part of their investigation into him over allegations of child sex abuse.

“My very good friend, the right honourable Ed Miliband, the leader of the opposition, recently described Mitzvah Day so accurately”
Lord Janner, in House of Lords in 2012

During the period, he voted 203 times out of a possible 459. Each time, he voted in line with the Labour whip.

He made frequent contributions to debates in the House of Lords, and put in several parliamentary questions.

During a debate in November 2012 about the role of religion in the UK, he referred to his “very good friend”, Ed Miliband, then Labour leader.

Janner talked about Mitzvah Day, a day marked by Jews “to help society, not financially, but by giving our most valuable asset: our time.”

“My very good friend, the right honourable Ed Miliband, the leader of the opposition, recently described Mitzvah Day so accurately: ‘It is through thousands of small actions that we build our families and our communities. The fruits of Mitzvah – small tangible signs of hope and solidarity – show that the shared wealth of a nation is measured not so much in pounds and pence, but in the bonds of compassion, care, and community.’”

Janner took leave of absence from the House of Lords in October 2014. A week before the announcement that he would not be prosecuted on 22 counts of sexually abusing nine boys, the House of Lords received a letter signed by Janner to request an extension to his leave of absence.

The details below of his voting record have been gathered from Parliament’s Hansard by The Public Whip, a not-for-profit body. Bills marked “[HL]” started in the House of Lords rather than the House of Commons.

Exaro also publishes today Lord Janner’s attendance record at the House of Lords since he gave power of attorney to his children.
